Increasing Economic Opportunities for Marginalized Youth in Northern Nigeria (Mafita)

First Follow-up Survey for the Project “Increasing Economic Opportunities for Marginalized Youth in Northern Nigeria (Mafita)” – World Bank (2018/19)

We implemented the first follow up survey data collection for impact evaluation of the Mafita project implemented by Adam Smith International and funded by UK Department for International Development (DFID). The objective of the survey is to assess if the vocational training interventions delivered by the Mafita program can improve the labour-market outcomes and economic well-being of marginalized youths; and if the interventions alter social, political and religious attitudes, and tendencies to engage in criminal activity and violent behaviour. The survey collected data on (a) basic literacy and numeracy skills; (b) soft skills; (c) time-use and social networks; (d) aspirations; (e) job-search efforts; (f) income and employment; (g) subjective well-being and mental health; (h) social, political and religious attitudes; (i) gender attitudes; and (i) criminal behaviour.

A total of 6,200 pre-selected youth for apprenticeship and COSDEC interventions and 3,790 caregivers were interviewed in the three Northern Nigerian states of Kano, Kaduna and Katsina.
