Measles Vaccine Coverage Survey (MVCS)

We were engaged to conduct the Measles Vaccination Coverage Survey (MVCS) targeting children aged 9 – 59 months in 36 States of Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in two phases: The first phase was conducted in the 19 Northern States in November 2015 while the second phase was conducted in the 17 Southern States in January 2016.

The goal of MVCS is to reduce the incidence and prevalence of measles in Nigeria by reducing the build-up of susceptible target population, providing children with a second vaccination opportunity and interrupting measles virus transmission.

The objectives of the MVCS are:

  • To assess the level of measles coverage in all States by age and sex and identify:
  1. subgroups of target population that are not vaccinated
  2. reasons for non -vaccination
  3. key communication channels used for the campaign
  4. Adverse Events Following Immunization (AEFIs) reported during the campaign
  5. strengths and weaknesses of program management

We visited a total of 21,458 households and interviewed 16,650 respondents nationally.
